Welcome to the BC Summer Reading Club!

What is the BC Summer Reading Club?

The BC Summer Reading Club is a free reading program for children. It is a great way for kids to maintain or improve their reading skills over the summer, meet new friends, learn more about their library, and have fun!

The Value of Summer Reading (Multi-languages)

How do we join?

To register for the BC Summer Reading Club, simply visit your local library.

The staff there will be happy to register your children and equip them with everything they need for the summer, including a reading record to log their reading.

In addition, they’ll be able to tell you about any summer programs and activities at the library.

When does registration begin?

Registration typically begins as school lets out, though it may vary slightly from system to system.

Just call your local library or visit their website to find out!

How does it work?

When you sign up, your child will receive a reading record to help keep track of their summer reading. On the back of each of the seven weekly panels there is room for kids to log their daily reading by recording titles, pages, or minutes read, or simply by colouring the bars or delightful icons.

Weekly stickers mark their accomplishments and at the end of summer, many libraries also award a medal to children who complete the program.

Be sure to ask at your library about special Summer Reading Club activities and events!

What should we read?

In the BC Summer Reading Club, ALL reading counts! Children are encouraged to read whatever they wish (story books, information books, even comic books!), in whatever language they feel most comfortable, including American Sign Language. They can also listen to someone else read or tell stories.

Staff at your local library will be happy to recommend books for your child to enjoy!

Who can join?

The BC SRC welcomes all children and their families to participate, and seeks to provide an accessible and fully inclusive program.

Is the program available in French?

The BC Summer Reading Club program materials are bilingual (English and French).

Children are encouraged to read books in whatever language they feel most comfortable, including ASL (American Sign Language).

If you have any questions, just call or visit your local library!

What if we will be traveling this summer?

If you are traveling in BC this summer, by all means, visit the local library — all participating libraries have been provided with “extra” stickers to accommodate visitors.

If you will be out of the province, just let your library know when you sign up!
